>>> IROC, the Institute for Refractive and Ophthalmic Surgery, is a privately owned company uniquely combining an eye care center for high-quality patient care and a research and development department that is well known for the development of the corneal cross linking system UV-XTM. IROC was founded by researchers from the Institute of Biomedical Engineering of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich and by physicians from the Department of Ophthalmology of the University Hospital Zurich. In the past IROC members have been highly inventive in the field of ophthalmology. Some of the procedures and technologies have become standard in eye care: Photorefractive keratectomy PRK (1986), Wavefront-guided LASIK (1999). Others show strong potential of achieving the same status in the future: Corneal collagen cross-linking (1999). Besides advancing its own projects the IROC R&D department is offering research services as well as medical device development, manufacturing and assembling to external companies.
